Understanding Low Self-Esteem

Low self-esteem is something many people experience at different points in life. It can show up as persistent self-doubt, feeling not good enough, being overly self-critical, or struggling to trust your own abilities and decisions. Over time, this can affect relationships, work, and your overall sense of wellbeing.
Low self-esteem is often linked with anxiety, shame, low mood and a tendency to withdraw, avoid challenges, or put other people’s needs before your own. For some people, these patterns connect with earlier experiences - including those connected with childhood trauma - such as criticism, bullying, difficult relationships, or feeling unsupported when growing up.
Low self-esteem is not a personal failing. It is often an understandable response to experiences that shaped how you learned to see yourself.
How low self-esteem can develop
Many people with low self-esteem notice that the same inner messages repeat again and again — such as feeling inadequate, unworthy, or afraid of making mistakes. These patterns tend to run quietly in the background — shaping how you speak to yourself, what you attempt, and what you assume about how others see you.
Low self-esteem is often connected with other difficulties such as stress, anxiety, low confidence in social situations, and feeling emotionally overwhelmed. Sometimes it is also linked to earlier life experiences where support, safety or encouragement were missing.
My work focuses on understanding how these patterns formed and how they continue to influence you today, rather than treating low self-esteem as a surface problem on its own.

Working with low self-esteem using an integrative approach
I work with low self-esteem using an integrative approach that blends hypnotherapy, psychotherapy and structured belief-based work. This allows us to explore both your present-day experiences and the deeper emotional learning that shaped your sense of self.
Hypnotherapy, where appropriate, is used as a calm and focused way of working with emotional responses and self-critical patterns while you remain fully aware and in control. Psychotherapy supports understanding your experiences, relationships and emotional responses. Coaching adds structure and practical direction so that insights can be applied in everyday life.
Rather than trying to manufacture confidence, the work focuses on building genuine emotional safety, a steadier sense of who you are, and a more compassionate relationship with yourself.

Rebuilding Self-Esteem in Everyday Life
People often seek support for low self-esteem when they want to feel more comfortable expressing themselves, speaking up, setting boundaries, or trusting their own abilities. The focus is not on becoming someone different, but on reducing the impact of self-critical thinking and building a more stable sense of self-worth.
Over time, many people notice that they relate to mistakes, challenges and other people's opinions in a less harsh or threatening way. The aim is confidence that doesn't need constant maintenance — that comes from actually feeling differently rather than just thinking differently.
Progress is always shaped by your needs and your pace.
Low self-esteem is one of the most common things people bring to therapy — and it responds well to work that addresses it at the right level.
"...a subconscious belief I have carried with me all my life — I'm no good! Until now. I have taken that monkey off my back and that is one of many things I have now unlocked and moved on. Very very clever but simple."
